Jennifer and Art Fanega live in Lafayette Hill with their 6-year-old daughter, Josie, and 1-year-old cat, Pepper.
The Fanega Family has been composting with Back to Earth Compost Crew for about two years, but this is not their first foray into composting. Prior to moving to Lafayette Hill, they lived in the city and composted for years through Bennett Compost (who recommended Back to Earth Compost Crew!).
Jen and Art choose to compost because it is better for the environment and good for local agriculture. Jen adds, “Plus, we do a lot of cooking, so we don’t want to see perfectly good recyclables go to waste.” In addition to cooking at home, Jen is a Health Supportive Personal Chef in the Northwest Philadelphia/Montgomery County area. She specializes in plant-based, vegan/vegetarian foods as well as food allergies, intolerances and sensitivities. She crafts custom meals for clients who have health conditions that require them to eat specific, health-supportive and allergen-friendly diets.
Composting is not the family’s only sustainable practice. They reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible. They use all-natural cleaning products and try to give away items that can be reused or seek out second-hand items whenever possible. They choose local and sustainable products first and belong to the Lancaster Farm Fresh CSA, as well as Weaver's Way Co-Op. The Fanega's also buy feedlot-free animal products and support local farms.
The Fanega’s tip for other like-minded families is to join a local "Buy Nothing" Facebook group to pass along unneeded items and to look for things that others are giving away. According to Jen, “It's a great way to support your neighbors, spend less money and help Mother Earth. One woman's trash is another woman's treasure".
Jen’s favorite thing about Back to Earth Compost Crew is the personal service! She says, “Colleen not only provides excellent customer service, she is an amazing human being! It feels good to support a local, woman-owned business that is doing great things for our planet.”
