Meet the Composter: Donna Mitchell

Donna Mitchell

Donna Mitchell lives in Blue Bell with two mature adults and a sweet poodle named Angel.

Donna, a non-profit software trainer, has been working from home since March 2020. Working from home is not the only change in Donna’s life due to COVID-19. She began composting with Back to Earth Compost Crew during the pandemic.

When Donna went to Montreal in 2019, her host composted, as required in Montreal. When she saw how easy it is to compost, she was inspired to give it a try at home.

While new to composting, Donna and her family have many sustainable practices, like using reusable grocery bags, reusable storage bags, glass storage containers and reusable water bottles. In addition to recycling, Donna collects rainwater for the plants and birds. The luckiest beneficiary of sustainable practices in the family is Angel! Donna makes homemade dog food for her with vegetables, grains and proteins.

Donna suggests that like-minded composters start thinking about what regularly used items can be replaced with sustainable items. She advises to be gradual in sustainable changes to keep from being overwhelmed. According to Donna, “pay attention to the packaging of items you're purchasing; many have a ridiculous amount of wasteful packaging.”

Donna encourages anyone thinking about composting to start saving food scraps and to sign up with Back to Earth Compost Crew. She explains, “It’s affordable, it’s a great way to teach your children responsible behavior, and it helps the Earth.”

Donna is not a gardener but aspires to be. She says, “I can't help but wonder the joy of harvesting something you've grown in the composted soil you helped to create!” No doubt, Angel would enjoy the harvest in her homemade dog food.

Donna’s favorite thing about Back to Earth Compost Crew is Woman Power teaching how each small change can impact the world and spreading awareness.  She also appreciates Back to Earth’s unrivaled dependability!
