Meet the Composter: Julia Bocchese

Julia Bocchese lives in Cheltenham with her husband, two little girls and Siberian Husky.  She and her family enjoy gardening, cooking, traveling, and just simply playing outside.

She works from home, running an SEO business: Homegrown Reach.  She offers SEO services for farmers, garden consultants, and other agricultural and sustainable businesses to help them rank higher on Google and reach more customers. To learn more about Homegrown Reach, visit: https://homegrownreach.com/.

Back to Earth Compost Crew is not Julia’s first experience with composting.  She has been composting since living in Center City, prior to moving to Cheltenham. Julia first started composting to reduce the amount of trash in her small Philly apartment and because she appreciated the sustainability aspect. Julia shares, “Now that we live in the suburbs, we're doing a lot more gardening and really get to see the benefits of actually using the compost in our garden.”

Julia practices all the sustainability basics with using reusable water bottles, trying to reduce use of plastic, getting produce from a CSA to acquire more local food that is not wrapped in plastic—and, used cotton diapers for her children. She also uses organic practices with her garden and hopes to have a rain barrel installed soon. In addition, Julia says “We have solar panels that came with our house, and it's really cool to see how much we're saving on electricity with those.”

People are often surprised to learn that she used cotton diapers for her girls when they were babies. According to Julia, “They really weren't much extra work, you can easily get stains out by drying them in the sun, it cuts down on your trash, and it saves a lot of money when you reuse them if you have more than one kid. There are some laundry cleaning services you can use, but we just washed ours ourselves, and we got the hang of it pretty quickly.”

Julia’s favorite thing about Back to Earth is how active the company is in the community with things like the compost giveback days, different types of recycling days, and just sharing about other local businesses.

We are happy to have Julia and her family as part of our Back to Earth composting community!
